General information about die cutting

Die cutting is the process of cutting shapes with a tool (the die).  The challenge is to cut hundreds or thousands of parts economically and within the required tolerances.  While this ubiquitous technology touches almost every product we use from clothes to cars, diapers, and computer disks, it is still somewhat of a 'black art'.   There is a wide variation in the materials used and how they react to the cutting process.

CRC brings a combination of experience and engineering skill to face the converting challenges presented to us by our customers.   Since 1986, when the company was founded we have been offering die cutting services, developing converting processes, and building die cutting equipment for ourselves and customers throughout the world.  We have retained our ability to build machinery and we put those skills at your service by fabricating special fixtures to produce your parts more efficiently.

Meeting our customer's need while making a reasonable profit and enjoying our work is our top priority.  We made a conscious choice of focusing on die cutting because the customer/supplier relationship is inherently a win/win experience.  We give you the benefit of our experience with processes and materials to optimize your product.   We understand your need for quick turn-around and maximum utilization of materials.   The devil is often in the details and the paper work, so we strive to get those right for you too.  CRC  provides you a good service and we meet our commitments, you supply the smile.

What to expect: When you come to us with a new job, we will ask you a number of questions that will help us determine the best process and material to use.   Based on your requirements and preferences, we will make a recommendation and provide you with a written quotation.

Here are a few of the basic questions we usually ask:

Reason:

What is the over all size of the part ( 2" X 4" or 14" X 24)?

to determine the equipment to use

How many parts will you need?

the type and size of tooling to use

Will there be many parts cut in the future?

how many cavities to put in the tooling

What material(s) are to be cut?

we can help with suggestions

What is the design: do you have a drawing or a sample?

engineering drawings are appreciated  but we can  generate then for you

What are the tolerance on the dimensions?

Are there other processes involved?

Are there any special requirements such as cleanliness or UV sensitivity of the material?

How do you want the parts to be packaged?

Are there special handling, counting, or labeling requirements?

When do you need the parts?

Here are a few answers to some of the common questions we are asked:

  • Rotary dies take 7 to 10 working days for the die maker to produce.
  • The cost of rotary dies varies from $300 to $1,200 in most cases but can go up to $100,000 for very large dies.
  • The cost of a rotary die is based on the size of the steel plus the number of inches of blades.
  • Steel rule dies take 5 to 7 working days and the cost varies from $35 to $600 but can cost substantially more for large or complex dies.
  • Rotary dies can be sharpened 3 to 4 times and will cut between 100,000 and several million parts each sharpening, depending on the material, length of runs, and the part configuration.
  • Many materials are available from warehouses and can be on our floor in less than a week.  Materials coming from the mill typically take 3 to 4 weeks to ship and 1 week in transit to us.
